You can try to logout via the dbus interface of ksmserver (see inside 
qdbusviewer). If that works, the problem is in the GUI. 
But I somewhat doubt that.
I have another idea: do you use KDE4's kdm or KDE3's kdm? I never tried 
the KDE4 version, and somehow I think most of the people out there are 
using   kdm from KDE3, maybe that has a problem?
