Hmm, --replace sounds like an option of KWin and other window managers.

Looking at startkde, it has a line like this
kwrapper4 ksmserver $KDEWM

So my guess is that for whatever reason KDEWM is set to "--replace", i.e. 
missing the actual window manager.

Probably a left over from a trial of compiz?
