You can learn a lot by reading all the mails in the list.
Some ([mails] you will just skip over quickly because the subject is not in
your focus or you feel it is too pointed for you now.
Else the subject might arouse your attention... HaHa, this trick might be
useful some(other)time... read quickly.
Or the trick may be of immediate use to you, then read carefully and
experiment if you dare.
When you have a problem, google first and then ask if you still need.
After all why would you need "background understanding of KDE" if it is not to
solve specific problems.
Also note that for specific problem solving, (e.g. updating or installing
programs) you will often need more than understanding KDE, like infos that
apply to your distribution and version of linux.
By the way, gentoo is just one flavour (distribution) of Linux.
