[Mingw-msys] Problem with chmod

Hi.
I am having trouble setting the acces permissions of directories on my msys 
installation. Host OS is Vista.

I give the following command:
$ chmod -vR 777 /usr/local/share/
mode of `/usr/local/share' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)
mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)
mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal/gimp-2.0.m4' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)
mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal/gimp-2.0.m4/tyr' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx)

It shows that the permissions have been changed correctly.
But they are not shown as changed when I ls the same folder.

$ ls -lg /usr/local/share/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x    3 wiseguy  Administ        0 Jul 28 17:14 aclocal

Is there something funky going on?
