[Mingw-msys] How do I make printf( "\033[32mtext" ) actually change color?

I'm using MinGW + MSys.
If I do printf( "\033[32mtext" ) in my program it just outputs garbage.
But if I pipe it into cat from msys:
myprog.exe | cat
then the actual color output is produced.
How do I make printf behave the same way in my program?
