Many thanks for your reply. config.log doesn't show much but I found what was wrong. It seems that g95-mingw doesn't like repeated paths.  Once I removed all repetead entries, the compilation went fine.  
 
However not all went as predicted; make install crashed.  /bin/install permission denied and some other weird errors.
