Dear Brian

Many thanks.  I think I get the picture.

One last thing -  I want to update my mingw installation to the lastest packages.  What should I do?   Can I get rid of old packages such gcc < 4.0 and the related libraries?

I am thinking of downloading the latest tar.bz2 packages and then using msys.bat to get an unix-like environment . Within msys cd /mingw and then bunzp2 and tar for all packages.  Am I doing right thing?

I am not sure how to get rid of old packages though.

regards

Ed
