Good news - gmp-4.2.2 was compiled and installed as it should be in the first.  Updating msys, mingw and changing two makefiles - mnp/Makefile and tests/Makefile ("$(M4)" issue) did the job.
 
Many thanks to JonY for all the patience and help.
 
Now to mpfr  ....
