Their newer boards use an updated Marvell controller which has different
problems...  And ICH9 which also is "enhanced" in strange and wonderful
ways.  I'm lucky to get 2 years out of a mobo, but generally keep a CPU
for as long as 4.

Now you have me wondering about my eSATA port.  My current backup device
is USB so I have nothing with which to test it.  I have disabled RAID in
the BIOS.

Promise cards are cheap.  Build the module into the kernel if you want
to boot from it.  There's something particularly frustrating about the
BIOS finding the kernel while the kernel can't find itself ;-)

I find the SATA read/write speeds worth the effort.
