Look for Hartmut. :)
OK, you used a mirror.
Yes. Much easier than using the, eh, Selbstauslöser. Looking at
dict.leo.org 'Selbstauslöser' is probably 'autotimer'. Hm. Or perhaps
'automatic release'.

Kids are so resourceful these days...
Recently, one explained to me the correct way to take a self portrait
using a mirror.
Stand in front of a mirror but point the camera at yourself and use
the
mirror to observe the viewfinder.
No more mirror images or camera in the picture.
I would never have thought of that.
Would have needed extremely good eye-sight prior to digital cameras!

That's why the kids figured it out and I didn't.
Now they're making cameras with LCD's on both sides so ya don't even
need a mirror anymore.
When someone asks me to take a pic for them, I still put the camera to
my eye, look stupid, then arms length and take the shot.
Kids wouldn't know a peephole viewfinder (or a roll of film, for that
matter) if it poked them in the eye.

I recently bought a new digital camera. It's nice, 12mp and 10X zoom.
VERY smart, even being able to pick faces out among clutter, but it has
no optical viewfinder. If you want one of those, you must either pay a
LOT of money, or get a DSLR (lot more money). Several times on a recent
trip to Texarkana and Arkansas, I did exactly what you describe.. The
review of this camera claimed that the display could be seen 'even in
direct sun'. Well, I can sure see the DISPLAY, but I can't see the
IMAGE! sigh. I guess I will need a hood.

I wouldn't buy a camera without an optical viewer. And I love the LCD on
my Canon that flips out and turns and rotates, so you can raise the
camera above your head and tilt the screen to see what your pointing at.
I like the optical because holding the camera to the head gives
additional stability, regardless of OS.

Terry R.
Yeah, I said that too. Unfortunately, there is a VERY small list of cameras in the $200-250 range that have optical viewfinders, and none of them met my other requirements. Maybe I just need a wide-brim hat for picture-taking.
