- certain mux types such as avi, mov and others indicate the duration
of the playback => no problem for mplayer
- others such as mpeg* don't, thus mplayer can only guess
a value for the duration
- in other cases mpeg* are embedded in stream types such as
[s]vcd, dvd that indicate a duration => mplayer will use those values.
- network streams may or may not indicate a duration 
- digital tv doesn't indicate a duration, for obvious reasons
