Bjorn,
usbgrabber=1 is only usefull if your webcam is a Intel one or you used a usb
to video adaptator .
the problem with error -71 (protocol error) seem to be a problem with the usb
layer.
have you try to change the usb socket ?
Is there some others usb devices connected ? try to remove all
have you try to used a usb key for example to see if your usb is working ?
