Also often referred to as V4L, Video4Linux is a video capturing API (Application Programming Interface) designed primarily for Linux. A lot of TV tuners and USB web camera devices support it and it often comes standard for Linux Kernel operating systems. Its name was taken as a simple counterpart for “Video for Windows” or V4L which bears no technical resemblance of any kind to V4L.
